Renato was hired as a faculty member by Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University in La Union immediately after graduating from college. He rose from the ranks and expects to retire as Professor I in 2022.
He taught crop protection courses such as entomology, plant pathology, and related fields. In his 40 years of teaching, he trained many students to become gainfully employed. Many of them also passed the licensure exam in agriculture. He spearheaded the creation of the Department of Crop Protection and offer plant pathology and entomology as additional special fields apart from crop protection.
Along with instruction, he conducted research and developed technologies on IPM of lowland crops using biological, botanicals, and cultural control methods that are akin to organic farming. He recommends the use of Metarrhizium to control weevils on sweet potatoes and weevils on rice. He also developed IPM technologies for mango, grapes, and other crops including silkworms. The outputs were inputted in the Techno-guides in Region 1 on vegetable production, Sweet Potato, and Cassava. One notable accomplishment is a Utility Model on the Process of Producing Hot Pepper Extract Spray for Bean Aphid Control.
Pertaining to awards, he was twice awarded as Adviser of Best Undergraduate Thesis, on community work as Extensionist of the Year, and a Special Award for the Utility Model that he developed.
He served as TESDA Consultant on NCI and NCII, member of the National Seed Industry Council, and panel evaluator of ILLARRDEC.
Rene is married to Edna Ferrer and has three sons: Christian Erwin, Phillip Andrew, and Charles Nikko.
